SBDC Client Success Story - Baird Avenue Square

Baird Avenue is back in business

Nicole Remble was introduced to the Inland Empire SBDC, in July 2020, by way of referral from the Hawthorne Small Business Administration. Mrs. Remble had an interest in starting her own Cottage Food Operation (CFO) to make and sell her square treats from her home in Moreno Valley. She needed assistance with understanding the limitations, acquiring a CFO permit and city business license, and properly pricing her product. Jay assisted her with the process from inception to launch by obtaining the proper permits and licenses and making her first sale.

SBDC's solution

Jay Allis, Inland Empire SBDC Business Consultant, reviewed the limitations and requirements of owning a CFO. Jay worked with her to obtain a fictitious business name, acquire a domain name, and establish a social media presence. Additionally, Jay provided input on the generation of sample labels for each product that she is offering. Next, the consultant and client completed and submitted the CFO application and provided instruction on how to obtain her food handler’s card. Upon CFO permit approval, Jay assisted Mrs. Remble with obtaining her City of Moreno Valley business license, EIN, CA Seller’s Permit, and a Home Occupation Permit (HOP). Further, the consultant and client discussed expanding her product offerings. Jay also recommended that Mrs. Remble meet with other Business Consultants to receive assistance with marketing, branding, accounting, and business expansion.

The Results

Through the assistance of Jay Allis, Baird Avenue Square launched on December 23, 2020 which created one job opportunity. Client injected her own funds to start the business and has started generating sales.
