SBDC Client Success Story – Temecula’s Little Bread Co

Temecula’s Little Bread Co Now Open for Business

Mr. and Mrs. Kalfus were introduced to the Inland Empire SBDC, in October 2020, when searching for guidance online to start their very own Cottage Food Operation (CFO) to make and sell artisan bread. They needed assistance with understanding the limitations, acquiring a CFO permit and city business license, and properly pricing their products. Jay assisted them with the process from inception to launch by helping clients obtain the proper permits and licenses and making their first sale.

How IESBDC Delivered Assistance

Jay Allis, Inland Empire SBDC Food Expert Business Consultant, reviewed the limitations and requirements of owning a CFO. Jay worked with clients to obtain a fictitious business name, acquire a domain name, and establish a social media presence. Additionally, Jay provided input on the generation of sample labels for each product that they are offering. Next, the consultant assisted clients with completing and submitting the CFO application, provided instruction on how to obtain their food handler’s card, and discussed shifting from an initial Class A Permit to a Class B Permit. Upon CFO permit approval, Jay assisted the Kalfus’ with obtaining the City of Temecula business license, EIN, CA Seller’s Permit, and a Home Occupation Permit (HOP). Further, the consultant and clients discussed expanding their product offerings. Jay also recommended that clients meet with other Business Consultants to receive assistance with marketing, branding, accounting, and business expansion.

The Results
