SBDC Client Success Story – Yadira Palencia

The Beginning

Yadira Palencia is a Latina single mother who wanted to give her boys a better life than the one she struggled through, through example and inspiration. Yadira came to the center with low self-esteem and found it difficult to express herself in public, which held her back in creating a client base. She founded her business (YP Tax and Bookkeeping) in Palm Desert, CA, on January 1, 2018. Hers is a home-based business offering bilingual tax preparation and notary public services. Yadira is a registered/certified tax preparer and CTEC certified with the state of CA. Since working with CVWBC, she recently added bookkeeping, loans, and credit repair to her services in order to maintain an income during “off-season”. She completed an accounting course and became a QuickBooks ProAdvisor. As she added these skills to her catalog, her business began to grow.
She was a part of the fall 2020 "It’s Your Time program" for business start-ups and early-stage businesses. It was there she learned foundational business information, wrote a prize-winning business plan, and especially, learned the power of support and community. Yadira became skilled in social media marketing, website expansion, financial literacy, business planning, and a wide variety of social skills. All of this has combined to make her a much more confident entrepreneur, who actively posts Facebook Live videos, networks and works hard to grow her own client base while sharing a sense of community with other women entrepreneurs.

The Result

Due to the training and counseling she received, Yadira has been able to grow her business increasing her yearly gross year over year – this is in the space of three months and before tax season impacts her sales. The additional skills she has acquired have focused her even more on creating successful outcomes, including hiring, expanding to a brick-and-mortar location, and growing her client base. As a poised and successful entrepreneur, she feels she has been given a gift: “…not only did my business grow, so did I as a person, an entrepreneur as a mom and as a businesswoman.”
